In Full View of All the Birds

Here are my thoughts on today's reading!
Today, we all read Proverbs 1:8-19. This passage talks about being pressured by others to do the wrong thing.
Many teen movies like High School Musical and others stress the same message--be yourself. Be like Troy and Gabriella. Choose to do something different, and everyone else will understand and like you and dance around singing, "We're all in this together!" Reality is so totally like that...right?
I think we're old enough to understand that life is not High School Musical. Even the real Troy
and Gabriella have made mistakes. At our age, everyone wants to fit in. Everyone wants to have friends and feel accepted. So if no one accepts us, we find ways to make others accept us. Then we adjust our tastes...change our wardrobe, buy new CDs, and maybe add or subtract a few words from our vocabulary. Eventually, we're so sucked in that we change into "one of them."
Remember the first two verses we read today? When we go back to school this year, let's remember who we are. Homeschooled kids are not exempt--don't leave the house forgetting what you've learned at home. We are Christians first and foremost. We need to put our foot down, draw the line, and be who we are whether people accept it or not. At the Liberate Conference I recently went to, one speaker said, "Let's quit being pressured and be the peer pressure."
"Do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; for their feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood." (Proverbs 1:15-16)
Sure, there's nothing wrong with making friends; but friends aren't perfect. We should be careful with who we decide to hang out with.
Right after Proverbs 1:15-16 is obviously verse 17: "How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds!"
QUESTION
I thought this verse was pretty interesting. A net in full view of all the birds--an obvious trap. What do you think Solomon meant by this verse?
Thanks for your time!

quite true, friends will fail you. But Christ will never fail you, and after everyone else has left, He is still there.

ok as to the verse question I think it means that evildoers are blind (not literally). am I wrong? don't know, good question. ^_^

I looked it up in a Bible commentary and this is what it said:

"Birds are smart enough to avoid a net they see spread out to catch them. But these gangsters [meaning bad company], more stupid* than birds, not only see the trap; they even set it for themselves! They lie in wait to shed others' blood, but they themselves get caught in their own trap."

*Sorry, the commentary used that word. :)

I thought the verse meant that the people that sin hurt themselves. So you're right...evildoers are blind because they think doing wrong is a good thing when they are actually trapping themselves.

I agree what you said about this section. It talks about how we are not to give into the ways of others, but to be strong and wise with God's strength and God's wisdom. In the first few verses it talks about how we are to listen to our parent's wise cousel, God gave them to us so that we will be prepared when we have to face the world that has been poluted with sin. So that we can be an influence on others instead of the other way around. We are supposed to be a light in the darkness. So, us as teens need to have a belief and stick to it. Be strong in what you believe.
"Therefore my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you.
Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, Because
you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain."

Samantha, thank you so much for starting this blog! Thank you for being a light in the darkness.
